Solar's flex-pack printing shines
July 8, 2008
I visited Solar Communications earlier today and was impressed by the company's strong moves toward flexible-packaging printing.
Primarily, it's a commercial house for offset-printed direct-mail and promotional products, but Len Brooker joined the company recently as flexo plant manager to push Solar's flex-pack business. A new 52-in., 8-color Flexotecnica N8G CI-flexo press was installed last fall and has been busy turning out magazine overwraps and printed films for laminating to direct-mail discount cards, etc. A key feature is a downstream, ninth station fitted with three Prime UV Systems curing units for UV varnishes to protect the surface flexo print.
Len let me in on plans to introduce a proprietary, demetallization process for flex packs. It already has customers looking at it as a replacement for similar work sourced overseas. Anything to bring business back home to the US of A sounds like a good idea to me.
Stay tuned for our Flexible Packaging Special Report this fall featuring Solar and other cool, new operations around the country.

The Flexotecnica N8G press is a major new addition to Solar's 25,000-sq-ft flexo facility.
